Ralph Waldo Emerson
To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

Things learned on the internet. Part XXIV
Lately, I have had small infestation of what I assume are fruit fly's. A quick search on the internets, and I was given this remedy : a small container filled with vinegar, and a couple drops of dish soap placed near the trash. The fly's go in for a swim, and they never come out....and it absolutely worked...who knew ?
Etymology : The word 'vinegar' comes from the Old French vin aigre, meaning "sour wine".

miniature giraffe
I saw this commercial for Direct TV, which in no way made me want to buy the product, but, it did make me have weird dreams about the miniature giraffe. Google shows 1,120,000 results for 'miniature giraffe'. One person on Yahoo Answers said, "Where can I get a miniature giraffe ?"

Hottest Trend Among Criminals: The Yankee Cap :
"The Times reported that since 2000, over 100 people suspected of committing a serious crime in the City were wearing Yankees attire either at the time of the crime or during their arrest or arraignment."
The Hot Word is a web site from Dictionary.com that explains the etymology of different words...

Seasonal Affective Disorder
I was never really on board for the seasonal affective disorder thing. It sounded like an ailment that was 'discovered' so that someone, somewhere could make some money... But, last winter changed all that, and I am now a firm believer of SAD (see, it even has it's own cute little acronym). So, my goal this winter is to not. be. SAD. Seriously, there is no way I can handle a winter like the last...I pretty much..slept for the entire winter..
In anticipation of the onslaught of clouds, snow, depression, and grey (ie. SAD), I am on a mission to eradicate this stupid thing from my life.
According to the Internet : "As with other types of depression, antidepressant medications and talk therapy can be effective. The first part of that sentence goes to my original belief; somewhere, someplace is making money on...just take a pill, and everything will be WONDERFUL ! Sorry, I don't buy it, will never buy it....Other places on the Internet site the lack of sunlight as a cause of SAD. While this too costs money to fix, it is not a drug, and I am more inclined to go that route.
Also, in my experience, I really did not do anything all winter, I went to work, came home...and slept.
So, for me, I think some sunlight (or close approximation), and ACTIVITY, are called for...

Endeavor to persevere. Part Two
It amazes me how many people find 'have podium mic..will travel' because of this one post from 2008. I always loved this scene : Lone Waite is brilliant, and Clint Eastwood is, Clint.
I found out much later that the movie is based on a book by Forrest Carter, who also wrote "The Education Of Little Tree", which is an amazing book that was brought to my attention by my good friend Stella. And then I find out (cursed internet) that Forrest Carter was some kind of wacked out racist ??
Anyway, a repost from 2008. This is from the movie The Outlaw Josey Wales :
"I wore this frock coat to Washington, before the war. We wore them because we belonged to the five civilized tribes.
We dressed ourselves up like Abraham Lincoln.
You know we got to see the Secretary of the Interior.
He said "Boy you sure look civilized." He congratulated us and he gave us medals for looking so civilized.
We told him about how our land had been stolen and our people were dying.
When we finished he shook our hand and said "Endeavor to persevere"...
They took our pictures and the newspapers said "Indians vow to endeavor to persevere."
We thought about it for a long time.
"Endeavor to persevere."
And when we had thought about it long enough,
we declared war on the Union."
Lone Waite, Indian chief - from "The Outlaw Jose Wales"

Moya Brennan, Sinead Madden, and why I would move to Ireland...
One of artists I worked with this summer was Moya Brennan from Clannad (and T with The Maggies). I had met her last year at the Dublin Irish Festival where she was filming a PBS special (Music of Ireland), and was struck by her love and appreciation of the bands that were performing, and at the same time time being such a down-to-earth, nice person. And then this year she performed three days on 'my' stage, and I was absolutely blown away. There is something about her music that can make you laugh...and cry, at the same time. I truly can not describe the gamut of emotions her music evokes...
And her band ! An incredible group of musicians, one of who, Sinead Madden, made me smile, dance, laugh...and otherwise act like a fool...but, I could not help it - she was like a ray of sunshine whose smile would melt your heart...( Sinead gave me a copy of her solo CD, Honey Promises, which I have listened to about a million times and think I would be the perfect person to mix it when(!?) she comes to America :)

Twas a long summer. First, I was in Atlanta, GA for 17 days at the Georgia Dome for the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, then I was off to Ft. A roaming cat turns garden into litter box. And kills birds.
From an article in the Boston Globe we learn that a town in Vermont is debating a proposed law that would mandate leashes for cats. Apparently, there are many sides to this important issue.
"A City Council meeting with cats on the agenda drew an unusually large crowd of about 30 people Tuesday night, including one woman who brought three large signs, one of which said, "Arrest criminals, not cats. Can Barre afford a jail for cats?"
"City officials cited complaints from some residents about a roaming cat that turned a neighbor's garden into a litter box."
"Cities around the country and at least one state have enacted or considered cat restraint laws. In 1949, the Illinois Legislature passed "An Act to provide Protection to Insectivorous Birds by Restraining Cats."
"Scientists estimate that free-roaming cats kill hundreds of millions of birds, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians each year," the Virginia-based American Bird Conservancy, which runs a "Cats Indoors!" campaign, says on its website. "Cat predation is an added stress to wildlife populations already struggling to survive habitat loss, pollution, pesticides, and other human impacts."
Good Dog
I finally went to Huntington Park to see the Columbus Clippers (the Indians' AAA Minor League team).
During the game they had a golden retriever named Jake, as the 'bat boy'. He was fantastic. He runs out after someone gets a hit, grabs the bat, and brings it back to the dugout with his tail wagging the entire time. He brings water to the umpires. He catches frisbees between innings. He is a good dog. And the Clippers won 11-0.

when will then be now ?
"What the hell am I lookin' at ? "
"When does this happen in the movie?"
"Now. You're looking at now sir, everything that happens now is happening now. "
"What happened to then? "
"We passed it. "
"When? "
"Just now. We're at now-now. "
"Go back to then."
"When?"
"Now. "
"Now? "
"Now! "
"I can't."
"Why? "
"We missed it."
"When? "
"Just now. "
"When will then be now?"
