Jeremy from Yellow Submarine

"Ha-ha!
If I spoke prose, you'd all find out
I don't know what I talk about!
Ad hoc, ad loc and quid pro quo!
So little time, so much to know!"

Ralph Waldo Emerson

To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Things learned on the internet. Part XXIV

Lately, I have had small infestation of what I assume are fruit fly's. A quick search on the internets, and I was given this remedy : a small container filled with vinegar, and a couple drops of dish soap placed near the trash. The fly's go in for a swim, and they never come out....and it absolutely worked...who knew ?

Except, now my kitchen smells of vinegar, which reminds me of some horrible chili I had at a local restaurant...but that is a whole different story.

Etymology :  The word 'vinegar' comes from the Old French vin aigre, meaning "sour wine".

Autism's First Child - The Atlantic

Great article from The Atlantic :
"Meet Donald Gray Triplett, 77, of Forest, Mississippi. He was the first person ever diagnosed with autism...And his long, happy, surprising life may hold some answers.” - The Atlantic

miniature giraffe

I saw this commercial for Direct TV, which in no way made me want to buy the product, but, it did make me have weird dreams about the miniature giraffe. Google shows 1,120,000 results for 'miniature giraffe'. One person on Yahoo Answers said, "Where can I get a miniature giraffe ?"

And another thing...why is this the second time I have posted something about giraffes ????

Road Ends at Waters Edge

Hottest Trend Among Criminals: The Yankee Cap :

"The Times reported that since 2000, over 100 people suspected of committing a serious crime in the City were wearing Yankees attire either at the time of the crime or during their arrest or arraignment."

The Hot Word is a web site from Dictionary.com that explains the etymology of different words...

New Web Site

Seasonal Affective Disorder

I was never really on board for the seasonal affective disorder thing. It sounded like an ailment that was 'discovered' so that someone, somewhere could make some money... But, last winter changed all that, and I am now a firm believer of SAD (see, it even has it's own cute little acronym). So, my goal this winter is to not. be. SAD. Seriously, there is no way I can handle a winter like the last...I pretty much..slept for the entire winter..

In anticipation of the onslaught of clouds, snow, depression, and grey (ie. SAD), I am on a mission to eradicate this stupid thing from my life.

When will then be now?
According to the Internet : "As with other types of depression, antidepressant medications and talk therapy can be effective. The first part of that sentence goes to my original belief; somewhere, someplace is making money on...just take a pill, and everything will be WONDERFUL ! Sorry, I don't buy it, will never buy it....Other places on the Internet site the lack of sunlight as a cause of SAD. While this too costs money to fix, it is not a drug, and I am more inclined to go that route.

Also, in my experience, I really did not do anything all winter, I went to work, came home...and slept.

So, for me, I think some sunlight (or close approximation), and ACTIVITY, are called for...
  1. Step one : I just bought a new camera, and I am determined to hit the streets, taking a million   pictures..The best of which will be found at When Will Then Be Now ?
  2. Step Two : Cooking. Lately, I have discovered the new wonderful world of Cooking. And I am working on a website that is basically 'Cooking for People Who Don't Know How To Cook'.
  3. Step Three : I might try something like this : HappyLight Full Spectrum Light Therapy System
  4. Step Four : ???? Have any ideas ? Leave a comment. Email. Talk to me...

Endeavor to persevere. Part Two

It amazes me how many people find 'have podium mic..will travel' because of this one post from 2008. I always loved this scene : Lone Waite is brilliant, and Clint Eastwood is, Clint.
I found out much later that the movie is based on a book by Forrest Carter, who also wrote "The Education Of Little Tree", which is an amazing book that was brought to my attention by my good friend Stella. And then I find out (cursed internet) that Forrest Carter was some kind of wacked out racist ??

Anyway, a repost from 2008. This is from the movie The Outlaw Josey Wales :

Lone Waite
"I wore this frock coat to Washington, before the war. We wore them because we belonged to the five civilized tribes.
We dressed ourselves up like Abraham Lincoln.

You know we got to see the Secretary of the Interior.
He said "Boy you sure look civilized." He congratulated us and he gave us medals for looking so civilized.

We told him about how our land had been stolen and our people were dying.

When we finished he shook our hand and said "Endeavor to persevere"...

They took our pictures and the newspapers said "Indians vow to endeavor to persevere."

We thought about it for a long time.
"Endeavor to persevere."

And when we had thought about it long enough,

we declared war on the Union."

Lone Waite, Indian chief - from "The Outlaw Jose Wales"

Moya Brennan, Sinead Madden, and why I would move to Ireland...

One of artists I worked with this summer was Moya Brennan from Clannad (and T with The Maggies). I had met her last year at the Dublin Irish Festival where she was filming a PBS special (Music of Ireland), and was struck by her love and appreciation of the bands that were performing, and at the same time time being such a down-to-earth, nice person. And then this year she performed three days on 'my' stage, and I was absolutely blown away. There is something about her music that can make you laugh...and cry, at the same time. I truly can not describe the gamut of emotions her music evokes...

And her band ! An incredible group of musicians, one of who, Sinead Madden, made me smile, dance, laugh...and otherwise act like a fool...but, I could not help it - she was like a ray of sunshine whose smile would melt your heart...( Sinead gave me a copy of her solo CD, Honey Promises, which I have listened to about a million times and think I would be the perfect person to mix it when(!?) she comes to America :)
